01 Feb How do I know God is real?
Even if we have grown up learning about God and praying to God, there are times we may wonder, is God real? Sharing with one another our honest questions and those moments we have felt God to be real we can help each other discover something that feels real to us. We’ve all had moments when happiness linked to gratitude has given us a sense that yes, God is real, or at least that good is real and present. And we can thoughtfully connect that good to proof of God.
Is good evidence of God?
A hymn puts it this way, “All of good, where ere be found, Its Source doth find in Thee.” The words are archaic, but the idea rings true. In some languages the term for God is the same as that for Good.
Mary Baker Eddy, who discovered the science of Christian healing, placed supreme importance on gaining a purely spiritual understanding of God’s nature. In Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, she writes, “It is our ignorance of God, the divine Principle, which produces apparent discord, and the right understanding of Him restores harmony.”
What is our concept of God?
In her opening chapter on prayer, she emphasizes how important it is for us to find a true understanding of God as Love, not as a mighty or punishing Ruler or kindly gentleman in the clouds. Understanding, not just blind faith, helps make God real to us, and lets us turn to Him each day for help and guidance.
God reveals himself in so many ways. Christian Science and our church Reading Room have wonderful resources to help your search. As the Scriptures promise, “Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.” (James 4:8). So glad you stopped to read this post.
